Maths KS1 Presentation

Mathematics is a tool for everyday life, which teaches us how to make sense of the world around us, by developing an ability to calculate reason and solve problems. It enables us to understand and appreciate relationships and patterns in everyday life and to analyse and communicate information and ideas. We must therefore ensure children in our school are taught to the highest standards possible and enable them to achieve and exceed national age expectations. We want to empower our children to be independent and confident learners who are able to use mathematics to make a positive contribution to their lives and society and use it to achieve economic well-being.

Our aim for children is:

  • To develop a positive attitude towards mathematics.
  • To develop confidence and competence in mathematical knowledge and skill.
  • To enable pupils to have opportunities for mathematical thinking and discussion.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to demonstrate and use their mathematics through a range of curriculum areas in everyday situations.
  • To promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion.
  • To develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, think logically and to work systematically and accurately.
  • To develop initiative and an ability to work independently and in co-operation with others.
  • To link Mathematics to other curriculum areas wherever possible.

We teach Mathematics 4 times a week through fun and interactive lessons. Children will begin the lesson with an interactive starter which may require children to use previous knowledge to answer questions or play a game. Or it may be a starter which is teaching a new strategy or concept that the children will begin to use in the lesson to follow. We teach from the National Curriculum (2014) through our own scheme of work ensuring that at the end of each term there has been broad coverage of a variety of mathematical areas. Teachers monitor and assess children very term and use this to inform future planning and report writing.

Our Mathematics Coordinator is Claire Whitehouse. Please feel free to see her should you have any questions.
