Design and Technology is an important part of our curriculum at St Saviour’s Infant School. Children are given many opportunities to explore their own design ideas, try them out, evaluate and make improvements, which support them to become independent thinkers. DT is very cross curricular subject and wherever possible is taught alongside other subjects, such as history, maths and science. It also provides lots of opportunities for children to work collaboratively and share ideas.

We ensure children have opportunities to explore a wide range of areas including cooking, construction, designing and evaluating, using tools, exploring materials and textiles. Projects have included designing and building Tudor houses as part of a Great Fire of London topic, making puppets and pop up cards, designing and building vehicles. One of our more ambitious projects being a whole school Lego project carried out in the summer term where children are involved in designing and building a complete model town in our school hall. Children are taught to think about and evaluate what they’ve done, suggesting ways in which they might improve their designs and work collaboratively to improve the whole.

Children also have lots of opportunities to explore the subject during weekly Discovery Time, when they can choose from a range of construction kits and resources to help them with their own projects. We also have a ‘Lego trolley’ which classes take turns to use, giving them access to a huge variety of Lego.
