At St Saviours Art is a very valued subject and we encourage children to be creative as much as possible. We have a wide range of resources and each class has a selection of materials and tools for children to practise the skills they have learnt in their own Discovery sessions.

We teach Art and Design to stimulate creativity and imagination. Art provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to use their creativity and imagination and is accessible to all.

Children can communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form and pattern. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of local and famous artists and designers.

Art is not taught in isolation, although we ensure correct techniques and skills are taught. Wherever appropriate it is linked to other areas of the curriculum and gives children the opportunities to learn specific techniques as well as developing and extending existing skills.

In Art we want our children to:

• be creative and express themselves through all art forms.
• enjoy themselves and be successful.
• have an enriched curriculum through activities that encompass all areas of the curriculum, different cultures and those that reflect our local community.
• develop a respect for others’ artistic tastes, talents and points of view.
• learn about different genres of Art through the appreciation of the work of other artists and crafts people from different times and cultures.
• develop their ability to observe, investigate, respond to and record events.
• develop their visual language and the ability to express their ideas and feelings in order to evaluate their own work and that of others.

We use the natural environment and natural materials as a valuable too for example visiting the Botanical Gardens in Bath where we took photographs to study colour and texture. We have also been involved with ‘Big Draw Week’ where we were visited by local artists and had some of the children’s creations were exhibited at the Holburne Museum. We are currently involved with the ‘Take One’ project run by the Holbourne Museum which gives children opportunities to study works of art in depth and exhibit their own artistic interpretations in the gallery. We use our outdoors spaces for drawing and painting and the local valley site provides a great source of inspiration for collage and clay work. We also have links to artists through the Bath Spa University 5X5X5=creativity project which allows children to work with artists and art venues to follow their own ideas and learn in a creative way.
